PIGMENTO blue to clad
the new Sports Park in Datong (China)
This new complex in Datong, in the north of Shanxi province, near Beijing in China, includes a 30,000 seat stadium, an 8,000 seat arena, an indoor swimming pool with a capacity for 1,500 people and a fitness centre. These facilities are part of a vast development plan initiated by the municipality of Datong to revitalise the old historic town and create a new town centre.
The project was awarded to Populous architecture studio. When designing the 4 buildings in the complex, the architects drew inspiration from the famous Yungang grottoes, located near the site. The Datong Sports Park combines the rich cultural and historical heritage of the town with the modernisation plan by proposing a modern design for a symbolic, pragmatic gathering place.
The entrance to the stadium is reminiscent of the entrance to the neighbouring grottoes, with a series of hulls clad in PIGMENTO blue zinc. Each building has the same cladding and motif as the main stadium. Stone and other rustic materials are used for the entrances to the buildings and strengthen the similarity with the surrounding environment.
